The Festival Transamériques greets the summer in Montreal with theatre performances at venues throughout the city. It presents more than 20 original works from the Americas and Europe, in both French and English, alongside discussions on current theatrical issues.
This event started out as a deliberate attempt to improve the cultural input to a region that had become relatively insular as a result of the Quebecois separatism in the 1960s. Nowadays, Montreal is a thriving cosmopolitan city and since its inception in 1985 the festival has presented hundreds of shows from around the globe and reached over 500,000 individuals. Many productions make their North American debuts at the event.
Over the years, the festival has welcomed great artists such as Peter Brook, Ariane Mnouchkine, François Tanguy, Robert Wilson, Elizabeth LeCompte and Peter Sellers, among others. For full details of this year's programme, please visit the festival website.
